Every growing business eventually asks: should we keep stitching SaaS tools together, or build something of our own? The honest answer is it depends, but it depends on a few predictable things.
Buy when
- Your process is standard (payroll, accounting, email marketing).
- The tool covers 80% or more of what you need without workarounds.
- You have no in-house capacity to own software long term.
Build when
- The process is your competitive advantage, and generic tools would make you average.
- Your team spends hours on workarounds, exports and spreadsheets between tools.
- Per-seat licence costs grow faster than the value they deliver.
- You need deep integration with partners, devices or legacy systems.
The hybrid path
Most businesses land in the middle: keep proven SaaS for commodity functions, and build a custom layer, such as a portal, workflow engine or AI agent, that ties them together around how the business actually works.
Questions to ask before you build
- What will this save or earn in the next 24 months?
- Who owns and maintains it after launch?
- Can we ship a useful first version in 8 to 12 weeks?
If the answers are clear, building is often the better long-term investment. Let us help you decide.
